Basic Pilsen – Fundamental knowledge to care for critically ill patients

We offer young doctors who treat or will treat critically ill patients in the future the opportunity to participate in the ICU BASIC (Basic Assessment & Support in Intensive Care) course.

Originally designed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) around 2000, the course has been successfully preparing young doctors or those who do not work directly in intensive care but occasionally come into contact with these patients for 25 years, covering the basic principles of treatment and care for critically ill patients.

Key topics

Physiology: Applied cardiovascular and respiratory physiology.

Monitoring and assessment: Hemodynamic monitoring, interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABG), and neurological examination.

Cardiovascular management and treatment of shock: Arrhythmias, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and treatment of shock.

Breathing and ventilation: Upper airway management, acute respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation (basics, modes, and troubleshooting), and noninvasive ventilation.

Neurology and sedation: Intracranial hypertension, sedation, and pain management.

Systemic problems: Nutritional support, infection control, metabolic and electrolyte disorders, and treatment of severe sepsis.

Logistics: Transport of critically ill patients and clinical communication.

Course format

The BASIC course uses a blended learning approach:

Participants study the course manual and e-learning materials before attending in person.

Lectures by experienced lecturers

Skill stations: Practical exercises and simulations are a key part of the teaching.

Target group

The BASIC course is suitable for:

Junior intensive care physicians: To build basic knowledge and skills for critical care.

Senior nurses: Suitable for experienced intensive care nurses.

Physicians: Who provide care to critically ill patients on an occasional basis.

Medical students interested in future work with critically ill patients.

Participants will receive an internationally recognized certificate upon successful completion of the course.

The course is recognized by a number of international organizations, including the European Society of Critical Care, Asia-Pacific Society of Critical Care, and College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia & New Zealand. The course was conducted in collaboration with intensive care units around the world, including Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, Singapore, and New Zealand.
