Anatomy is one of the cornerstones of preclinical medical education. It examines the structure and organisation of the human body. Anatomical knowledge forms an essential foundation for further medical studies, while its importance extends beyond medical education to clinical practice.<\/p>\n

At the Department of Anatomy, teaching combines lectures and practical sessions, with cadaveric dissection forming an integral part of the curriculum. Direct examination of anatomical specimens enables students to understand topographical relationships, morphological characteristics and anatomical variability.<\/p>\n

Individuals who choose to donate their bodies for educational and scientific purposes make an invaluable contribution to anatomical education. Their generosity and the significance of their gift are reflected in the Latin saying: Mortui vivos docent \u2013 The dead teach the living.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Our current research places particular emphasis on cadaver-based anatomical studies that integrate multidisciplinary expertise. This encompasses the molecular and microanatomical characterisation of tissues, the systematic documentation of clinically significant anatomical variations, and computational bioinformatics platforms for three-dimensional modelling and precise surgical planning within translational applied anatomy. The Evolution of Our Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prior to 2012, our research \u2013 conducted in collaboration with the Department of Surgery of University Hospital Pilsen and the Biomedical Center \u2013 contributed to prestigious Czech and international research consortia investigating abdominal aortic aneurysm. Subsequently, in collaboration with Prof. V\u00e1clav Li\u0161ka, we launched initiatives aimed at refining corrosion casting techniques for the porcine hepatic vascular system, with the objective of improving the comparative modelling of hepatic perfusion. International collaboration with Prof. Alois Lametschwandtner (University of Salzburg) and Prof. Charlotte Debbaut (Ghent University) has centred on the vascular networks of large organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First-Year Students Represent the Department of Anatomy at the Student Scientific Conference for the First Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In April 2026, the 63rd<\/sup> Student Scientific Conference (SVO\u010c) marked an exceptional milestone for the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University. For the first time in the Department\u2019s history, first-year General Medicine students presented scientific projects of their own. Under the expert supervision of Assoc. Prof. Omid Moztarzadeh, MD, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Anatomy, and Bacem Othman, MD, Ph.D., the students engaged, during their very first year of study, in projects combining classical anatomical methods with digital technologies, virtual dissection, and mathematical and biomechanical modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The projects spanned a broad thematic range \u2013 from the determination of sex and age from historical skeletal remains, through the virtual analysis of the musculature of the arm, to the modelling of the vascular bed, of coronary anatomy and of the spatial architecture of the lymphatic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The involvement of students as early as the first year demonstrates how the teaching of anatomy can be integrated with scientific work from the very outset of medical studies. Participation in the SVO\u010c gave the students their first opportunity to present the results of their own work to a professional audience and to gain experience in scientific presentation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Anatomy at the IFAA 2026 World Congress in Melbourne<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From 13 to 16 August 2026, Melbourne, Australia, hosted the 22nd Congress of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA 2026), one of the foremost international meetings of experts in the anatomical sciences. The Department of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, was represented at the Congress by its Head, Assoc. Prof. Omid Moztarzadeh, MD, Ph.D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department\u2019s research findings were presented in two poster communications: Anatomage-Based Virtual Mapping of Head and Neck Venous Anatomy<\/strong> and Anatomage-Guided Reconstruction in Head and Neck Oncology: A Standardised Virtual Surgical Planning Algorithm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both studies address the application of digital technologies and 3D reconstruction to the clinical anatomy of the head and neck region. The former is devoted to the virtual mapping of venous anatomy; the latter, to the use of digital reconstruction in the planning of surgical procedures in head and neck oncology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Congress provided a forum for contemporary approaches in clinical and surgical anatomy, imaging methods, digital anatomy and modern educational technologies. Scholarly discussion of the presented projects and the exchange of experience with institutions from abroad formed an equally important part of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The insights gained and the professional contacts established at the Congress will inform the Department\u2019s future research and teaching, particularly the further development of clinical anatomy, 3D reconstruction and digital methods in student education. The next IFAA World Congress will take place in three years\u2019 time in Santiago, Chile.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
