Prof. Hemminki is an extraordinary, globally recognized and respected personality in the field of genetics and epidemiology of cancer. During his professional life to date, he has not only produced an extraordinary number of major scientific results, as evidenced by his bibliographic record of more than 1600 articles and an H-index of more than 100, but has also contributed directly to the formulation of treatment and diagnostic procedures and classification criteria for a number of serious and fatal cancers. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that Prof. Hemminki’s work has ultimately helped to improve the health and quality of life of thousands of cancer patients. During his time in academia, Prof. Hemminki has also been an enterprising and stimulating supervisor and mentor to a number of younger researchers, some of whom have already reached the pinnacle of their own successful careers, in which Prof. Hemminki’s leadership has played no small part.
