We asked: moving furniture

Published: 13.08.2024

It is not uncommon for furniture and other equipment to be moved around the campus. This causes a number of complications. What are they? We asked representatives of the faculty: prof. MUDr. Dana Müllerová, Ph.D. – Vice-Dean for Faculty Development and External Relations, Ing. Jan Vořech from the Security Department, Ing. Marie Klečková – Secretary of the Faculty, Ing. Petr Vais from the Operations and Technical Department and Mgr. Adam Šoukal from the Legal Department.

Is moving furniture a problem in terms of safety?

J. Vořech: Clear escape routes are one of the safety priorities. They also serve as access routes for firefighters, rescue workers, police. The IZS has building plans showing the emergency (escape) routes and any obstacle on the way is an unpleasant surprise. Therefore, the legislation imposes the obligation to keep escape routes clear and remembers the possibility of penalties for faculty, staff or students. In short, SAFETY FIRST, FREE WAY.

Why does it matter if furniture is moved between rooms?

M. Klečková: The campus has been in operation for more than a year. In that time, we have tolerated to some extent the moving of light equipment, such as coloured sofa bags from the student room on the first floor. Currently, furniture is moved almost constantly from its original location to the five floors of the campus. This greatly complicates the mandatory inventory of assets. Each room has “its” property. Matching them and returning them to their original state during the inventory is difficult and places high demands on faculty staff time.

There are cases where furniture is moved by elevator. Is this a problem?

P. Vais: The handling of furniture and other furnishings takes its toll and damages them. At the same time as the furniture is being damaged, the moving of furniture (especially four-seater sets with tables) causes serious damage to the tile floors. Due to the sophisticated technology of flooring construction, even minor scratches cannot be easily repaired locally. Students also move furniture in lifts intended for passenger transport, which also results in the destruction of lift cabins. Furniture is not meant to be moved and handled, only in exceptional cases such as conferences, exhibitions, fairs etc., when moving is arranged by the staff of the Operations and Technical Department.

Can the handling of furniture be penalised?

A. Šoukal: For all of the reasons mentioned above, part of the operating rules is a prohibition on moving or changing the layout of furniture. In the event of a serious or repeated violation, the guilty party could be called before the faculty disciplinary committee.

D. Müllerová: However, I believe that a safe environment on campus and trying to keep it in a nice condition for a long time is a common concern of the faculty administration and students. The beautiful facilities we have here are not a given – and I hereby thank all responsible users for their considerate attitude towards them.
