Prof. Milena Králíčková elected the new Rector of Charles University
Facultas nostra 2021, December
On 22 October 2021 the Academic Senate of Charles University elected the new Rector of CU. In secret ballot prof. Milena Králíčková, the current Vice-Rector of CU for education and at the same time the head of the Department of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen of Charles University and the head of one of the two research programs of our Biomedical Center, won against her rival candidate by a comfortable number of votes.
Her career has been linked to our faculty since its beginning. In the last year of the high school in Strakonice she hesitated between applying to medicine and mathematics. In the end prof. Králíčková decided to submit her application at the faculty of medicine, because, as she says, she “chose a profession where helping other people is the main mission”. For a long time she wasn’t sure which specialization to choose. Already as a student she worked at the Department of Histology and Embryology under the supervision of prof. Slípka, but she also wanted to do the clinical medicine. That’s why after her graduation in 1996 she applied for a position of a doctor at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University Hospital in Pilsen. At that time she completed a one-year internship at Harvard University thanks to the sponsorship of the Fulbright Commission and, as she says, she has always been grateful for this opportunity. During her stay she worked for a year at the Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated with Harvard University. There she was a part of an international team led by prof. William F. Crowley. She had the chance to do cutting-edge science there, but she could also see the benefits of connecting scientific work with clinical practice and with educational activities for students. At the same time she learned managerial skills from prof. Crawley.
After coming back from the internship and completing her PhD she continued her work at the clinic and completed her specialization in gynecology and obstetrics. She also continued to teach medics. She likes to think back to the times she spent at the labor ward in the team of midwives and pediatric nurses. Science prevailed over clinical work when her own children came. Later, already as the Vice-Dean for the development of the Faculty, she took part in the establishment of the Biomedical Center. Since 2011 she is the head of its Department of Histology and Embryology. Under her management the department has successfully implemented new scientific and teaching methods and new equipment has been installed in its laboratories. The department team is coherent and enthusiastic. Prof. Králíčková is perceived by her students and her team as a respected and popular pedagogue and “boss” just like prof. Jaroslav Slípka was at the time when she started her studies. We all wish her lots of success in her new life challenge!
Prof. Králíčková will assume the office of Rector in February 2022 for the term of four years. She had one rival candidate – Michal Stehlík, the former Dean of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. She will replace the current Rector, prof. Tomáš Zima, who will terminate his second term in office.
